Best Places to See Fall Colors in the U.S.: 10 Incredible Autumn Destinations

There is something about fall that makes me want to pack a bag and go somewhere.

Maybe it's the cooler weather. Maybe it's the cozy sweaters, little mountain towns, and an excuse to drink something warm while walking around outside.

Or maybe it's because for a few short weeks every year, entire mountains, forests and towns turn shades of red, orange and gold.

Whatever it is, I'll take it.

The tricky part about planning a fall foliage trip is figuring out where to go and when to go. Peak color doesn't happen everywhere at the same time, and Mother Nature definitely doesn't care about our vacation schedules.

So if you're dreaming about a fall getaway surrounded by beautiful autumn scenery, here are 10 places in the U.S. worth traveling for.

1. Stowe, Vermont 🍁

If someone asked me to picture the perfect fall town, Vermont would probably be somewhere in that picture.

Stowe is surrounded by mountains and forests that explode with color during autumn. Add covered bridges, scenic roads, local shops, and that classic New England atmosphere, and it's easy to understand why people travel here specifically for fall.

You can explore the town, take scenic drives through the surrounding mountains, or simply find somewhere beautiful to stop and enjoy the view.

Best for: Classic New England fall scenery, couples, scenic drives, and cozy weekends.

Typical foliage season: Late September through mid-October, although peak color varies each year.

2. White Mountains, New Hampshire 🏔️

New Hampshire is another destination that seems made for fall.

The White Mountains offer some incredible foliage views, and one of the area's biggest attractions during autumn is the Kancamagus Highway.

The drive is only around 34 miles, but don't expect to fly through it. You'll want time for overlooks, photos, and stops along the way.

Honestly, this is one of those trips where the drive is part of the destination.

Best for: Scenic drives, mountain views, photography, and road trips.

3. Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee & North Carolina 🍂

If New England isn't in the cards this year, head south.

The Great Smoky Mountains are gorgeous during fall, and because the area has different elevations, the color change can stretch over several weeks.

You can combine foliage viewing with hiking, scenic drives, cabins, and a stay around Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge.

This is also a great choice for families because there's plenty to do beyond leaf-peeping.

Best for: Families, cabins, hiking, mountain trips, and longer fall getaways.

4. Acadia National Park & Bar Harbor, Maine 🌊

Fall foliage AND the Maine coastline?

Yes, please.

Acadia gives you forests, mountains, rocky coastline, and ocean views all in the same trip. Then you can head into Bar Harbor for restaurants, shops, and that charming coastal-town atmosphere.

It's a completely different fall experience than simply driving through the mountains.

Best for: National parks, coastal scenery, couples and outdoor adventures.

5. Catskills, New York 🍁

The Catskills are a fantastic option if you want mountains, forests, and cozy small-town energy without traveling deep into northern New England.

Fall brings beautiful colors throughout the region, and you'll find plenty of scenic drives, hiking opportunities, cabins, and little towns to explore.

This would be such a good long-weekend trip.

Best for: Weekend escapes, cabins, couples, and scenic drives.

6. Hocking Hills, Ohio 🍂

And yes, Ohio absolutely belongs on this list!

Hocking Hills is already one of Ohio's most beautiful outdoor destinations, but fall makes it even better.

The combination of colorful forests, cliffs, waterfalls, and hiking trails creates some gorgeous autumn scenery.

Explore places like Old Man's Cave, Ash Cave, and Cedar Falls, then spend the night in one of the area's cabins.

And if you're an Ohio traveler like me, you don't have to spend half your vacation getting there.

Best for: Midwest travelers, weekend trips, cabins and hiking.

7. Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia & North Carolina 🚗

The Blue Ridge Parkway deserves a spot on almost every fall road-trip list.

The route winds through mountain scenery with plenty of overlooks and opportunities to stop along the way.

Instead of treating it like a road you simply use to get somewhere, give yourself enough time to actually enjoy it.

Pull over.

Take pictures.

Go for a hike.

Find somewhere local to eat.

That's what makes a fall road trip fun.

Best for: Road trips, mountain views, photography, and couples.

8. Upper Peninsula, Michigan 🌲

Michigan's Upper Peninsula might not get the same fall-travel attention as Vermont, but don't overlook it.

Forests turn brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red while waterfalls, lakes, and the Lake Superior shoreline give you completely different scenery throughout the trip.

The area around Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is especially beautiful.

Just remember: northern Michigan can get chilly quickly.

9. Aspen, Colorado 🏔️

Colorado brings something a little different to fall: gold.

Aspen trees turn brilliant shades of yellow and gold against the mountains, creating a completely different look from the red-and-orange forests you might picture in New England.

Take a scenic drive, explore hiking trails, or simply enjoy the mountain scenery.

Fall color in Colorado can also arrive earlier than people expect, especially at higher elevations, so timing matters.

Best for: Mountain adventures, photography, hiking, and dramatic scenery.

10. Shenandoah National Park, Virginia 🍁

Shenandoah National Park is another beautiful place to experience fall from the road.

Skyline Drive runs through the park and offers dozens of overlooks where you can stop and take in the mountains and valleys.

If you want more than a scenic drive, there are also plenty of hiking trails throughout the park.

Pack snacks, leave room in your schedule, and don't rush this one.

Best for: National parks, scenic drives, hiking, and weekend trips.

🍂 When Is the Best Time to See Fall Colors?

Here's where fall travel gets a little tricky.

There isn't one magical weekend when the entire country hits peak color.

Generally, northern destinations and higher elevations begin changing earlier, while southern areas tend to peak later. Weather conditions can also move the timing forward or backward from year to year.

That means don't book a trip based solely on what happened last October.

As your trip gets closer, check the destination's current foliage reports and local tourism updates.

If your dates are flexible, even better.

🍁 Tips for Planning a Fall Foliage Trip

A few things can make your trip much easier:

Book popular destinations early. Fall weekends can be extremely busy in places known for foliage.

Travel during the week if you can. You'll often encounter fewer crowds than on peak weekends.

Start early. Popular scenic roads, trails, and overlooks can get crowded later in the day.

Don't schedule every minute. Some of the best stops are the ones you didn't plan.

Check the weather before leaving. Fall temperatures can change dramatically throughout the day.

Pack layers. Cool morning + warm afternoon + cold evening is basically fall's personality.

🚗 Turn It Into a Fall Road Trip

One of my favorite things about fall travel is that you don't necessarily have to choose one destination.

Pick a scenic route and make several stops.

A mountain overlook here.

A little town there.

A hiking trail.

A roadside market.

A restaurant you didn't plan on finding.

Sometimes those random stops become the things you remember most.
