Best Places to Travel in October in the U.S.: 10 Trips Worth Taking

October might be one of the best months of the entire year to travel.

There. I said it.

Summer crowds are starting to disappear in many places, temperatures are cooling down, fall colors are showing off, and Halloween gives us an entirely different excuse to plan a trip.

The best part?

An October vacation can look completely different depending on where you go.

You can chase fall colors through New England, rent a cabin in the mountains, spend Halloween somewhere spooky, explore a national park, or head somewhere warmer when you've already had enough of cold weather.

So if you've got a few vacation days, or even just a free weekend, here are 10 places in the U.S. worth traveling to this October.

1. Salem, Massachusetts 🎃

You knew this was coming.

If Halloween is your favorite holiday, there probably isn't a more obvious October destination than Salem.

The city hosts its annual Haunted Happenings celebration throughout October, bringing Halloween events, tours, costumes, attractions, and LOTS of visitors.

But Salem isn't only about Halloween.

Its connection to the 1692 witch trials makes it an important historical destination, with museums, memorials and historic sites throughout the city.

And this year, I'm putting this one to the test myself because I'm heading to Salem for Halloween.

2. Stowe, Vermont 🍁

If your dream October trip involves mountains covered in fall colors, cozy little towns and classic New England scenery, Vermont needs to be on your list.

Stowe is especially beautiful during fall.

Spend your trip exploring scenic roads, enjoying the mountain scenery, checking out local shops, and simply taking in everything that makes New England so popular this time of year.

Just remember that fall foliage doesn't follow an exact calendar. Peak color varies from year to year, so check current foliage reports before your trip.

3. Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee & North Carolina 🏔️

The Smokies are one of my favorite choices for travelers who want a little bit of everything.

You get mountains.

Fall colors.

Hiking.

Cabins.

Scenic drives.

And nearby destinations like Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge give you plenty to do when you're finished staring at trees.

Because elevations vary throughout the mountains, fall color can appear at different times across the region.

4. Asheville, North Carolina 🍂

Asheville gives you a really nice combination of city + mountains.

You can explore restaurants, shops, and breweries and then head out for scenic drives through the Blue Ridge Mountains.

October is especially appealing because you can build an entire trip around fall scenery without having to spend every minute outdoors.

Perfect for: Couples, food lovers, mountain scenery, and long weekends.

5. Sleepy Hollow, New York 👻

Want Halloween atmosphere without going all the way to Salem?

Sleepy Hollow might be exactly what you're looking for.

The area is famous for Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and embraces its Headless Horseman connection during fall.

Combine Halloween events and historic sites with Hudson Valley foliage, and you've got an October getaway that checks both the fall and spooky boxes.

Perfect for: Halloween lovers, literature fans, couples, and fall road trips.

6. Bar Harbor & Acadia National Park, Maine 🌊🍁

This is one of those destinations where I wouldn't know where to look first.

Mountains?

Fall foliage?

Rocky coastline?

Ocean?

Cute town?

Yes. 😂

Acadia National Park offers beautiful scenery throughout the year, but autumn gives the landscape an entirely different look.

Stay around Bar Harbor and combine outdoor adventures with restaurants, shops, and coastal New England charm.

Because seasonal hours and services can change later in fall, check what's operating during your travel dates.

Perfect for: National parks, couples, photographers, and coastal adventures.

7. Hocking Hills, Ohio 🍁

You don't have to fly across the country to have an amazing October getaway.

Hocking Hills is one of my favorite examples of how beautiful the Midwest can be during fall.

Forests surround cliffs, caves, waterfalls, and hiking trails, and the entire area becomes even more beautiful when the leaves start changing.

Rent a cabin, explore Old Man's Cave, visit Ash Cave and Cedar Falls, and turn it into an easy weekend escape.

And for my fellow Ohio travelers, this one doesn't require an airport or a 12-hour road trip.

We love that. 😂

8. Estes Park, Colorado 🏔️

October in Estes Park gives you mountains, wildlife, and a gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park.

There's also a little spooky-season bonus.

Estes Park is home to the Stanley Hotel, which famously helped inspire Stephen King's The Shining.

So you can spend the day enjoying mountain scenery and then add a little haunted-history atmosphere to the trip.

October weather at higher elevations can change quickly, though, so always check current conditions before heading into the mountains.

9. Savannah, Georgia 👻

Maybe you want October atmosphere without needing three sweaters and a winter coat.

Hello, Savannah. 😂

Historic streets, beautiful squares, old buildings, Spanish moss, and ghost stories make Savannah especially fun during spooky season.

Explore the city during the day, take a ghost tour at night, and enjoy a completely different October experience than you'd get in New England.

And finally, October doesn't HAVE to mean foliage and Halloween.

October generally brings more comfortable conditions for outdoor exploration than the heat of summer, making it a popular time for hiking and sightseeing.

Explore the trails, take a scenic drive, watch the sunset, and enjoy a completely different version of fall travel.

🎃 If You're Traveling Around Halloween...

Book early.

Especially if you're considering somewhere known for Halloween celebrations.

Hotels, tours, and popular attractions can fill up quickly as Halloween approaches.

And don't make the mistake of assuming you can simply show up and figure everything out once you arrive.

🍂 Don't Forget the Weather

October is one of those months where packing can get interesting.

You could wake up freezing, spend the afternoon taking your jacket off, and need it again by dinner.

And depending on where you're traveling, you could encounter rain, wind, or even early snow at higher elevations.

Check the forecast immediately before leaving and bring layers you can easily add or remove.

🚗 Turn Your October Trip Into a Road Trip

If you've got a little extra time, October is perfect for road trips.

Instead of picking one destination, choose a scenic route and explore several places along the way.

Stop at overlooks.

Explore little towns.

Find a hiking trail.

Grab something from a roadside market.

🍁 October Doesn't Last Long

That's probably what makes October travel feel so special.

Fall colors don't last forever.

Halloween comes and goes.

And suddenly we're decorating for Christmas and wondering where the year went.

Visit the town you've been saving on Pinterest for three years.

October gives us a pretty small window to experience this version of the country.

You might as well enjoy it somewhere beautiful.
