There is something about fall that makes me want to pack a bag and go somewhere.

Maybe it's the cooler weather, the changing leaves, the cozy little towns, or the fact that you can finally spend an entire day outside without feeling like you're melting. Whatever it is, fall might be one of the best seasons for exploring the United States.

And you don't have to plan a huge vacation to enjoy it. Some of the best fall trips are road trips, long weekends, and small-town escapes.

If you're wondering where to travel this fall, here are 10 destinations worth adding to your list.

1. Salem, Massachusetts

Of course, Salem had to make this list.

Salem is famous for its history and connection to the 1692 witch trials, but during fall, especially October, the entire city becomes one of the country's most recognizable Halloween destinations.

Historic streets, old buildings, museums, seasonal events, ghost tours, Halloween decorations, and New England fall weather all come together to create an experience that's hard to find anywhere else.

And this one is especially exciting for me because I'm actually heading to Salem this Halloween!

Sitting beside Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the area offers beautiful mountain scenery, hiking trails, scenic drives, attractions, restaurants, and cabins.

It also works especially well for families because you can mix outdoor adventures with attractions in Gatlinburg and nearby Pigeon Forge.

4. Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville combines fall scenery with food, art, mountains, and one of America's most famous scenic drives.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is particularly beautiful during fall, and there are plenty of overlooks where you can stop and enjoy the changing landscape.

5. Bar Harbor, Maine
